Sims 4 October skin tones update: More fixes in November

Sims 4 Skin Tones Fixes Red Dots

The Sims 4 is in the process of rolling out a major update to the game’s skin tones. The second part of this process will include hundreds of new skin tones and a slider to allow for additional customisation.

The first part was rolled out along with the free October update. It was a much smaller update, designed to fix some of the issues with existing skin tones and hair styles in The Sims 4 base game.

But many players pointed out that the fix for the skin tones did not appear to have fixed all that much. Players were further frustrated by the fact that the Sims did not seem to acknowledge the frustration of players.

For some time now, many players have been frustrated by the (lack of) communication from The Sims 4 team.

However, it seems the team is starting to listen to players. On Friday, Michael Duke, a senior producer with The Sims 4, explained what was causing the issues with the existing skin tones. He also said that there are additional fixes to come.

Fixing existing issues with a game that’s been around for six years can be quite a challenge, so it is always appreciated when The Sims 4 team share some of the behind-the-scenes insights on how these processes work.

“We have seen your concerns about the October skin tones update and we wanted to be more clear about how we are addressing it and why, including a look at the solution,” Duke explained.

“Texture Compression was causing banding on the cheeks and foreheads as well as discoloration on the tip of the nose. We modified our pipeline to turn off compression with our patch in October to resolve those issues but we have more work to do,” he added.

  • “We have two fixes coming in November that address a display issue causing red dots around the lips and a dark blotch between the eyes. The fixes are being tested at this moment, but we wanted to share a first look with all of you.”

The additional fixes will address a specific issue with noticeable red dots appearing on some skin tones. Sim Guru Duke shared some before and after screenshots on Twitter.

While the bigger changes will come when the additional tones are rolled out, it’s encouraging to see The Sims 4 team starting to communicate around some of the issues raised by players.

The Sims 4 will announce its tenth expansion pack next week. While there are a few theories about what it might be, we know for sure that it won’t involve bunk beds, farms, cars or free babies.

Freeing babies from their cribs have been high on the wishlist for players since the fourth edition of the popular simulation franchise first launched six years ago. But babies have always been a bit of a challenge in The Sims. We might have to wait for The Sims 5 to for those wishes to come true.
